![]() As you read this, the Black Lives Matter movement against systematic racial injustices against black people is raging across the United States and other parts of the world. The criticism this time, however, was a notch higher, because not only was she unwilling to accept that her stance was transphobic but she was launching this crusade at a time when there are more worthy causes demanding her attention. She has apparently been labelled a TERF- Trans-Exclusionary Radical-a woman who believes that trans people somehow threaten her own feeling of womanhood. Now, it is widely known that this isn’t Rowling’s first time voicing anti-trans opinions. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women – ie, to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is a nonsense. Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate ‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. We’re getting too used to asking this question, aren’t we? It all began when Rowling, on Twitter, shared an op-ed that used the phrase ‘people who menstruate’ and got a little snarky with her displeasure that the word ‘women’ wasn’t used instead. However, what’s even worse is that after annoying Merlin’s pants off of HP fans by retrofitting the original HP canon for greater representation, she is now poised to Avada Kedavra her legacy on a hill of transphobia. And then, she self-sabotages it by messing up with the original canon so badly, that fans want her to leave her own creation alone. Like the show, she starts off on a high note with the extended Harry Potter franchise, turning it into one of the biggest phenomena of our time. Rowling’s career trajectory as a version of HBO’s Game of Thrones series. Kind of like how JK Rowling tends actively to spew venom on trans people.I’ve often visualised J.K. They like to ‘other’ people they do not understand or cannot control. Plus, his character is also a stand-in for unimaginative, straight-laced (aka dull) people who tend to abhor strangeness in others simply because they do not relate to it. Vernon’s behaviour is quite reflective of Christianity’s historic hostility towards Paganism and the occult. He is a bully, and it is easier to torment people who are smaller than you. But some of Vernon’s dislike stems from fear. Vernon finds out that magic is real, and he chooses to be a hateful Muggle. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a magical world if it suddenly reveals itself to us one day? Plenty of Potterheads are still waiting for their Hogwarts letters to this day, and the rest keep hoping their pet starts talking to them randomly one day.īut Vernon had no reason to be so unpleasant and narrow-minded about magic. She was in awe and wanted to practice magic too, just like her sister. Petunia’s first reaction to discovering magic was entirely normal. As much as that does not excuse an adult from discriminating against a child, there was some backstory explaining her behaviour. She grew up resenting her sister, her parents who favoured her so blatantly, and Harry and magic in turn because it was all just a reminder of her personal embarrassment. ![]() Harry’s aunt Petunia’s childhood rejection from her parents-who obviously preferred Lily for being the golden child of the family-and Dumbledore turned her into a scornful human. The one main character in Harry Potter, who can be deemed objectively the worst is actually the ever-parochial Vernon Dursley (portrayed with just the right amount of nastiness by the late Richard Griffiths). Even the pompous Percy Weasley is an easy target. A better case can be built for the worrying behaviour of Cormac McLaggen, the Gryffindor jock who took to stalking and harassing Hermione. But, of course, in art being annoying is more of a cardinal sin than being downright evil. People love to shit on Lavender Brown a lot too for simply being an annoying teenage girl in love with Ron Weasley.
